Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW)

Introduction to CLOW

The Children's Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) is a special Celebration of the Scriptures with readings from the Children’s Lectionary.  It provides the children with a celebration of the Liturgy of the Word during Sunday Mass that is geared especially for them. It consists of hearing the Sunday readings proclaimed using a special Children's Lectionary, discussion, and sharing. Everything in the liturgy is adapted to their level of understanding so that the Living Word of God may be made real and present for them.

Who?

Any child, ages 5-10, can participate just by being present at Church when CLOW is celebrated. There are no registrations, no fees, and no sign-ups necessary.

When?

The Children's Liturgy of The Word is held weekly during the 11:00 AM Sunday Mass, from September to June.

How?

After the opening prayers of the Mass, the celebrant calls the children forward along with an adult leader.  The leader presents the Children's Lectionary to one of the children and the children receive a blessing from the priest before processing to the Chapel for their own Liturgy of the Word. The children then rejoin their families in Church prior to the Presentation of the Gifts during the Offertory. There they remain with their families for the Liturgy of the Eucharist and the remainder of Mass.

What Happens at a CLOW Session?

Taking the developmental needs of the children into account, the catechist creates a presentation and discussion of that Sunday’s Scriptures that will meet the children at their level of understanding. It allows them to become more involved in the Liturgy of the Word, and to better appreciate what takes place during this special time of the Mass.

How Can We Help?

CLOW's success depends on adults who are willing to give of their time and talent to serve the needs of our parish children. There are several ways adults can become involved in CLOW:

*Parents can be become involved by encouraging their children ages 5-10 to participate, and by asking them about their experience and what they "learned" after Mass.

*
Adult leaders are needed to supervise the children, present the scriptures and to explain and coordinate discussion with the children about the readings.

*Adult Helpers are needed to assist with the supervision of the children who participate in CLOW. Adult helpers serve to help maintain a prayerful attitude among the children during the celebration of the Liturgy.

*Adult Leaders and Helpers go through an orientation and training to enable them for this special, exciting ministry and receive ongoing support from the program director.

*Police checks are required for adults involved in the program according to the Office of Child Protection of The Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

If you have any questions or if you want to become involved please contact, Fr. Nick at 215-463-1326
